JOHN & MARY GALLOWAY            #1

The family arrived in the Gnowangerup District in 1927 with her husband and three small children.
In a letter written on the 24th June in 1966, her son John Galloway describes her life:“With my father and three small children she arrived in Australia from Scotland and immediately went to live in a tent in a remote block between Cape Riche and the Stirling Ranges.
Later in 1930 they acquired a virgin block some 15 miles south east of Borden where my mother assisted in building a house and in sinking a dam to provide water.
She lived alone here with the children for long periods while my father was away contracting.
In 1936 a fourth child (myself) was born and owing to the absence of, or the distance from, my mother supervised all of her children’s education through primary level from correspondence schools.
This involved a period from arrival in Australia in 1927 until 1951.
Due to tragic circumstances, she had to leave Borden in 1961 and once again, care for two small grandchildren until recently. (1966)
She has been a member of the CWA, firstly, the Borden branch and at present the Gnowangerup branch for a for 19 years”.
Mary’s husband, John, died on 18 October 1972 aged 77 years and is buried at Gnowangerup.
Mary died on 24 May 1974 and is also buried in Gnowangerup.
